Bodmin Folk club is pleased to welcome back an old friend of the club, Mark Dowding.
Mark is a Lancashire-based folk singer, multi-instrumentalist, historian, and dialect scholar known for his engaging performances and deep knowledge of folk music.He began playing guitar at the age of 11, inspired by his sister’s Christmas gift and spent several years practicing in his bedroom and developed a strong interest in folk groups such as The Spinners, The Fivepenny Piece, and The Houghton Weavers. Early influences also included The Oldham Tinkers and Mike Harding, whose songs he continues to perform today. He became involved in local folk clubs in Ormskirk and the Dicconson Arms, gradually becoming a regular performer in the North West folk scene
Mark has a warm, friendly performance style that encourages audience participation. He has a particular interest in songs and tales from Lancashire, often performing pieces that reflect the region’s history and culture. Beyond singing, he is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, banjo, mandolin, and concertina. His performances are enriched by his expertise as a historian and dialect scholar, allowing him to provide context for each song, including its origins, social background, and meaningHis repertoire includes both traditional and contemporary folk songs, often accompanied by stories and historical insights.
