Viv Legg .. Catch Me If You Can

By | September 26, 2025

Over the summer, many Bodmin Folk club regulars had the privilege of being at the launch of a new, remastered and extended CD from Veteran, Catch Me if You Can, featuring the family songs of Vic and Viv Legg, 2 of the clubs regulars. Along with Mossy Christian , who we will beMay be an image of 1 person and beard welcoming back to Bodmin in January, and Pete Coe, who is coming back in May tbc, Vic and Viv kept hundreds of people enthralled with their story of how the family sang and many tales of family May be an image of 3 people and textlife. One comment overheard at Whitby Folk Week was ‘it was too short, an hour wasn’t long enough, we could have listened to them all day!’  It was an added bonus to have Doc Rowe there  who filmed the whole presentation for his archives so it would never be lost.

On another page you will find Vic’s story of how he began singing, so we asked Viv if she could give us an insight into how she began ………

Listening to my family singing probably inspired me to continue their tradition, I used to hear my grandmother, aunts, father and mother singing, in fact, there was always someone singing around our house, mainly my father and myself.
For a few years I was involved with the local amateur operatic society and played one or two major parts, one being Kate in the Yeomen of the Guard (Gilbert and Sullivan) Milkmaid in Oliver, and also got a cameo award in another show. I was and still am, a bit nervous when it comes to performing, and my mother gave me the push I needed to go and sing ‘the family songs’ and other songs I have picked up along the way.
It was difficult going from top soprano in the shows to singing in a different way, lowering my voice, for folk. I have achieved a lot more than I ever thought possible and have made a couple of CD’s, mainly down to a push May be an image of 5 peoplefrom my mother, ‘Go out and do it like the rest’, so with trembling knees at times, I try my best. Also I have had a lot of encouragement from some of the folk greats.

I was honoured to be at 2 of the 3 launch sessions the team did and I have the new CD but if you haven’t, then it is worth getting a copy from Veteran’s website veteran.co.uk or download it on Bandcamp.
